IN dealing with East London we have found some of the local employments to be so characteristic of the life of that part of London, and a knowledge of their conditions so necessary to the consideration of the evils called "sweating" that we have devoted separate articles to them, forming in this edition a separate volume. The employments dealt with thus are Dock Labour, Tailoring, Bootmaking, Cabinet-making, Tobacco manufacture, Silk weaving, and women's work generally.

No such case exists for dividing other districts of London industrially from the Metropolis as a whole, but by way of comparison a chapter is added to this volume describing tailoring and bootmaking in Central London.

The accounts of the East London trades here given refer to the year 1888 that is, to the period immediately preceding the strikes of 1889-90, and the changes then brought about.
