(Chandler's old nemesis Edmund Wilson), and "From the Memoirs of a Private Detective" (Chandler's old hero Dashiell Hammett). Just about every first-rater - and plenty second-raters - of the era, so bursting with brilliant and completely irreconcilable wisdom that you'll be shocked any one book could print them all without spontaneously combusting.
